Two very different curves
Caffeine is fast and sharp. Theobromine is slow and broad. It peaks at around two to three hours and carries a half-life estimated between seven and twelve hours. Because it crosses the blood-brain barrier less efficiently, its central stimulant effect is far milder. Most of its action is peripheral: theobromine is a mild vasodilator, widening blood vessels and easing blood flow rather than revving the nervous system.
Why “no crash” isn’t just marketing
A crash is largely a slope problem. When plasma caffeine falls quickly from a high peak, adenosine — which has continued accumulating the whole time — floods back onto its receptors. The subjective result is the familiar mid-afternoon collapse.
Theobromine’s curve has no comparable cliff. It rises gently, plateaus for hours, and declines slowly. Subjective reports in the literature consistently describe “even” energy, fewer spikes, and a calmer quality of attention rather than jittery alertness.
There’s a second mechanism worth noting. Caffeine’s jitteriness is partly a vascular story — it can produce mild vasoconstriction alongside its neural stimulation. Theobromine does the opposite. Pairing them, as cacao and coffee naturally do, tends to buffer the sharper edges of the caffeine experience.

The dose reality
Theobromine’s gentleness is partly a potency story. Gram for gram it is a considerably weaker stimulant than caffeine — estimates vary, but roughly an order of magnitude weaker in central effect. Cacao contains substantially more theobromine than caffeine by weight, which is why cacao-forward drinks feel the way they do.

A note on individual variation
How you personally handle caffeine is substantially genetic. The CYP1A2 enzyme does most of the metabolic work, and common variants split people into faster and slower clearers.
